For healthcare providers

Accessible websites for healthcare providers

Patients use your website to find a provider, request an appointment and fill in forms. We find the barriers that stop people with disabilities from doing that, fix them in your site's code, and give you a dated report against WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

What the rules require

Healthcare organizations that receive funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for example through Medicaid or HHS grants, must make their websites and mobile apps meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA under the Section 504 rule. Organizations with 15 or more employees must comply by May 11, 2027, and smaller organizations by May 10, 2028 (HHS announcement of the current deadlines).

Private practices without HHS funding are generally still covered by Title III of the ADA, which lists the professional office of a health care provider, hospitals and pharmacies among the businesses open to the public.

Whether and how these rules apply to your organization depends on how it is funded, so confirm with your attorney. We test against the standard the rule names and document the results, so you and your attorney know where you stand.

Common barriers on healthcare websites

  • Appointment and contact forms

Fields without labels, unclear error messages or time limits that stop patients from requesting care.

  • Provider and location search

Filters, maps and result lists that don't work with a keyboard or screen reader.

  • PDF patient forms

Scanned or untagged PDFs that screen readers can't read or fill in.

  • Low contrast and images of text

Insurance details, hours or instructions that people with low vision can't read.

  • Chat and pop-up widgets

Dialogs that trap keyboard focus or can't be closed.

  • Videos without captions

Content that patients who are deaf or hard of hearing can't follow.

How we work

  • We audit your key pages and patient journeys against WCAG 2.1 Level AA, with manual keyboard and screen reader testing.
  • We fix the barriers in your website's code. On closed platforms we can't edit, we document exactly what the vendor needs to change.
  • We retest every fix and give you a dated report of the scope, the work completed and anything still open.
  • Downloadable forms and documents can be included in the scope when you need them.

What we don't touch

  • Patient data. We test public pages and test accounts only, never real patient records.
  • Systems run by vendors, such as patient portals and online booking tools. We test them as part of the patient journey and document the barriers so you can raise them with the vendor.
